Billion Oyster Project

The Billion Oyster Project is a restoration initiative reviving New York Harbor's once-flourishing oyster populations, which historically numbered in the billions.

Roseate gives 20% of every wand sale to the Billion Oyster Project supporting its work repopulating the living reef communities of oyster beds in New York Harbor.

  • Big Apple, Oyster Capital

Until the late 1800s, oysters were so plentiful they were sold on street corners. During a visit to New York in the 1790s, the French politician Moreau de St. Mery noted that “Americans have a passion for oysters, which they eat at all hours, even in the streets.”

  • End of an Oyster Era

Overfishing, along with deadly outbreaks of typhoid and cholera, forced the closure of the local oyster industry in 1927. You can be sure that any bivalves you order at NYC restaurants today are not locally farmed!

  • Restoring Reefs

As of 2022, Billion Oyster Project had restored more than 100 million oysters to New York Harbor, where they form reefs that increase the waterway’s biodiversity and help protect the city from storm surges.

  • A Trusted Nonprofit

The Billion Oyster Project holds a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for its impact and transparency.
