In “The Book of The Pearl,” renowned gem expert George Frederick Kunz described Queen Pomare of Tahiti playing marbles with “black” pearls in the early 1800s. Perhaps they were similar to these – not actually black (because Tahitian pearls aren’t), but a stunning gradation of iridescent hues.
